libros madridWhy not change, if only for a day, the classic “fast-fashion” consumerism made in China for a purchase, compulsive or non-compulsive, of a book? You will probably spend less and feel more beautiful inside. For many years now, the autumn second-hand book fair hasn’t taken place, a fair that precedes de Feria del Libro (Book Fair) in El Retiro, but this should not be an impediment to immerse yourself in permanent book fairs, also known as bookshops.

An option to start a bookshop tour of the city is La Fugitiva, on Calle Santa Isabel, 7, one of the most charming streets in the city. It is a café as well as a bookshop and here you can find many new books as well as classic titles. If you can’t decide which one to choose, you can always go for the homemade cakes in a quiet atmosphere, something as rare as it is pleasant.

Not far from there, you will find a bookshop that is even more original, if that is even possible. It is called Libros Cercanos and its peculiarity consists in that the price is given by each customer. It is a non-profit bookshop, a foundation that emerged from the love of books, where you can become a member for six months for just 10 euros, which gives you the right to as many books as you wish. However, don’t expect the latest releases there, although the initiative is commendable. Find it at Calle Dos Hermanas, 12.

If you’re in Malasaña, don’t forget to visit Tipos Infames (Calle San Joaquín, 3), one of the spaces dedicated to literature most popular amongst writers and readers alike, rivalising in presentations and events with La Central in Callao (Postigo de San Martín, 8), a stone’s throw from our hotel in Madrid by Puerta del Sol. Both have a bar service where you can enjoy a coffee or a beer with your new book. At Tipos Infames, also, its owners are proper bookstore keepers and can give you advice and information about the newest releases.

And, of course, don’t miss out on Cuesta de Moyano, leading up to El Retiro, with all of its new and second-hand books that make it Madrid’s most charming literary spot.
