The top flamenco clubs in Madrid

If you’re a fan of flamenco, you’re in luck, as the city of Madrid is home to some of the best flamenco ‘tablaos’ (clubs, or, literally, ‘stages’) in the region. And what’s more, by opting to combine art and gastronomy many of them also offer an experience that takes the performance aspect to a whole new level.

Corral de la Morería

Generally considered the world’s number one tablao, the Corral de la Morería is also one of the best known in Madrid, and has been chosen by the New York Times as one of the 1000 places you should visit before you die. Founded in 1956, it has evolved into a shrine to the art of flamenco. Over the last few years, however, it has also decided to offer an authentic Michelin Star culinary experience. The kitchen is run by Bilbao chef David García, and his tasting menu, entitled ‘Gargantúa’, consists of 9 dishes, highlights among which include potatoes in salsa verde sauce with cod kokotxas (cheeks) or lobster with coffee hollandaise and bean consommé… a culinary proposal that is guaranteed not to disappoint.

Flamenco de Leones

Located right next to the Puerta de Alcalá, this production fuses traditional and contemporary flamenco under the direction of dancer and choreographer Jonathan Miró. In the main room, ‘Museo de los Sentidos’ (Museum of the Senses) visitors can enjoy the performances Atardecer, Anochecer and Madrugada (Twilight, Nightfall, and Dawn) while the culinary proposal offers a contemporary take on Andalusian cuisine with a selection of tapas among which we can highlight the seasoned almadraba tuna or smoked sardines with crunchy coca.

La Carmela

This club is located in the red-brick-lined underground vaults of a former monastery in the capital city and offers a unique setting in which to experience the art of flamenco through a unique production by creator, dancer and choreographer Juan Andrés Maya. The tablao also offers a unique gastronomic proposal that includes torreznos with green mojo and Don Bocarte baby octopus ‘a feira’ with potato parmentier. That said, the stars of the culinary show would have to be the rice dishes, such as free-range chicken paella.

These three tablaos not only offer some of the best flamenco shows in the region, but also an exceptional gastronomic experience.
