Mercado Medieval Chinchón

If you are looking for something different during your stay in Madrid, we have a suggestion for you. The arrival of Carnival in Chinchón is like travelling back to the Middle Ages. Since it began in 2005, the Medieval Market is one of the most visited markets in the Community of Madrid. Do you want to know why?

On the 2nd and 3rd of March, Chinchón goes back in time to the medieval period in order to commemorate the visit that the Catholic Kings made to this municipality. The objective of their journey was to visit their most important and loyal friends: Marquises de Moya, Andrés de Cabrera and Beatriz de Boadilla. This event is re-enacted by residents of the village and it is one of the highlights of the Medieval Market.

Over the course of the two days, you’ll find a wide variety of artisans’ stalls selling hand-crafted confectionery and breads, queimada (traditional Galician alcoholic drink), cold meats and cheeses, and even chocolate that will warm you up if the weather is cold. There are also a range of different events for the whole family: storytellers, magicians, jugglers, jesters, musicians, parades and historical re-enactments.

There is also a space dedicated to the traditional cuisine of south-east Madrid, where you will be able to taste popular dishes such as garlic soup or migas (a bread-based dish). To ensure that your experience is as authentic as possible, you can also dance to the rhythm of period music and watch performances typical of the medieval era.

Chinchón Carnaval

To make the most of your visit, take part in the Chinchón Carnaval, which also takes place over this weekend. Put on your best costume and get involved with this cheerful and colourful party. If you still haven’t chosen your costume, let yourself be inspired by the Middle Ages, the historical period of the region’s celebrated Medieval Market.

And, last but certainly not least, don’t forget to visit the Chinchón’s Plaza Mayor, one of Spain’s most notable examples of an arcaded square. If you haven’t organised your accommodation in Madrid yet, don’t miss out hotel’s offers.
