La Platea: un espacio para perderse
La Platea is a brand-new shopping centre on Calle Goya, 7 (next to Plaza Colón) that will celebrate its first ever Christmas this winter after its inauguration last June. With an initial investment of 60 million euros, it is a gamble but a firm one to revamp the whole outdated ‘shopping centre’ concept. And so, more than 20 gourmet food bars from different countries, high-range gastronomic offers and gourmet shops complete what is a very tempting food offer.
A good idea in order not to get lost is to start at El Foso, an area located in the basement with a large central dining area, surrounded by bars that serve cuisines from all over the world: Mexican, Italian, Japanese and Argentinian (a special mention goes to the juicy boneless ribs (entrecorte) at 7 euros per ration.
The service method is an original one and it is based on the client ordering at any of the bars and receiving a device with a light that they take back to the table with them. When their order is ready, the device is set off with lights and sounds and then the food can be picked up.
Make sure you do not miss the area known as Patio, filled with different stalls and shops such as La Shopera de DA2, which sells a neat selection of Madrid souvenirs and gifts to take back, much better than the average souvenirs you can find. Also worth a visit in the upper area is the restaurant of the famous chef Ramón Freixa, Arriba, or the Japanese restaurant lead by Rafael Sánchez, one of the most prestigious sushi men of today, groomed in the kitchen of famous Suntory.
Flower stalls, exquisite fruit shops and gourmet bakeries complete the offer of this new concept of shopping centre, ideal to spend a nice day of Christmas shopping in.
It is in the area of Plaza de Colón, approximately a 30-minute walk from our hotel by the Puerta del Sol or a 20-minute public transport ride away.
