Eat grapes for New Year’s Eve in Puerta del Sol. You can only do this on two days every year: 30 and 31 of December . Puerta del Sol has become the main place to welcome in the new year, a square where, every year, thousands of locals and tourists alike enjoy the most popular end-of-year tradition, the place where the New Year’s Eve party begins.

Boat ride in El Retiro. The perfect plan if you are travelling with children or friends or even for a romantic afternoon with your partner. Visit this park and enjoy one of the most emblematic attractions in the city.

Eating a fried-squid sandwich. Enjoy this authentic local dish in the traditional bars of El Brillante or Cervecería Sol Mayor or in more modern ones such as La Gabinoteca or John Barrita.

Go and see Guernica in the Reina Sofía Museum or Las Meninas in El Prado. These are two of the most famous works of art in the world and if you come to Madrid you will have the privilege of being able to see them both.

Watch the sun go down from the Temple of Debod. This is one of Madrid’s most beautiful and unique attractions, an ancient Egyptian monument from the 2nd century AD which offers the most stunning sunsets in the Spanish capital.

Having a hot chocolate with churros in the afternoon at Chocolatería San Ginés. This bar which is famous for its hot chocolate opened over 100 years ago in the centre of Madrid and it is one of the essential stops for everyone who is visiting the Spanish capital.

Eat the traditional cocido in one of the city’s legendary restaurants. Sample the best version of this delicious local stew in Casa Carola, La Taberna de la Daniela, La Bola or Malacatín.

Visiting the Crystal Palace in El Retiro. There are many locals who don’t even know about its existence. This palace, built in 1887 for the Philippine Exposition, is a structure of metal and glass that makes an impression on everyone who sees it.

Have you seen any of these eight places? Come to Madrid and start crossing them off your list!
